Centre of Excellence Jean Monnet

UNIVERSITY OF CADIZ THE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE JEAN MONNET, AND THE BILINGUAL MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND MIGRATIONS

THE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

The European Commission granted a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence to the University of Cadiz “IMMIGRATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN EUROPE’S EXTERNAL BORDERS”. THE BILINGUAL MASTER OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND MIGRATION WILL BEGIN IN 2018-19

The International and European Law  Department of the Cadiz University  has received a grant for the period 2017-2020 to establish a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in “IMMIGRATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN EUROPEAN EXTERNAL BORDERS- INMIGRACIÓN Y DERECHOS HUMANOS EN LAS FRONTERAS EXTERIORES EUROPEAS”. The Centre is directed by Professor Alejandro Del Valle Galvez and will be one of the fifteen designated by the European Commission worldwide.

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “IMMIGRATION AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN EUROPE’S EXTERNAL BORDERS” objective is to be a European and trans-national center for training, research and dissemination of scientific knowledge on Immigration issues, Borders and Human Rights, with a close attention paid to the geographical context of the University of Cadiz. The Center will be based at the University Institute of Research for Social and Sustainable Development – Instituto Universitario de Investigación para el Desarrollo Social y Sostenible (INDESS), located in the campus of Jerez and will also be incorporated in the International Campus of Excellence in Marine Science (CEIMAR).

The Center of Excellence will develop its activities in the different campuses of the University of Cadiz, as well as in the University Abdelmalek-Essaadi of Tangier-Tétouan. It will also carry out divulgation activities in Secondary and High School educational centers in the province of Cadiz. The University-Business Foundation of the province of Cadiz (FUECA), the Campus Tecnológico Foundation of the Bay of Algeciras, and the Europe-Direct Office of San Fernando and Algeciras will collaborate in these activities.

The main activity to be developed by the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence will be the organization and implementation of the Bilingual Master in International and European Studies – International Relations, EU, Immigration and Human Rights (Máster bilingüe en Estudios Internacionales y Europeos – Relaciones Internacionales, UE, Inmigración y Derechos humanos), during the academic year2018/2019.

With the granting of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, the work of the Public International Law and International Relations Department of the University of Cadiz regarding research and training in the field of European integration is acknowledged and prized. The International and European Law team has already obtained four consecutive competitive grants from the Research, Development and Innovation national programme (2005-2018), a Jean Monnet Chair in “Migration and Borders”” and two Jean Monnet Modules; one on the “European External Action” and the other on “Immigration and Human Rights”. The International Law Department edits and publishes two international electronic journals: Paix et Sécurité Internationales (in collaboration with the University Abedelmalek-Essaadi of Tangier-Tetouan) and the Gibraltar Reports.

The new Center of Excellence converts the University of Cadiz into a centre of reference in the field of Migration, Borders and Human Rights at the international and European level.

THE BILINGUAL MASTER

BILINGUAL MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL AND EUROPEAN STUDIES: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, EU, MIGRATIONS AND HUMAN RIGHTS –

60 ECTS- January-September 2019- 65% English- 35 % Spanish

The Centre of Excellence Jean Monnet presents its Master in International and European Studies: International Relations, EU, Migrations and Human Rights – Máster Bilingüe en Estudios Internacionales y Europeos: Relaciones Internacionales, UE, Inmigración y Derechos Humanos, directed by Dr. Alejandro del Valle, Full Professor in International Public Law and International Relations in the University of Cadiz and Dra. Inmaculada González, Professor in International Public Law and International Relations, which will be taught from January 2019.

This Master will be launched under the commitment between the University of Cadiz and the European Commission within the Framework of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, and it comes with the vocation of being an original postgraduate program in the University of Cadiz. The innovation of this academic offer is highlighted not only due to its cutting-edge theoretical and practical training in the area of International Relations and contemporary Migration policies, but also for its remarkable internationalization purpose; since it is the only bilingual English-Spanish postgraduate degree in the University of Cadiz, Andalucía and Spain, in these cross curricular areas with great practical incidence.

This Program was originally designed within the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair on Borders and Migrations, and now it is offered in its fourth edition, completing the Social Science and Law Studies academic offer in the University of Cadiz, in the area of International Relations and International Law. Due to its interdisciplinary bilingual condition, this Master’s has three fundamental features:

–It strengthens the bilingual teaching –mainly in English- in postgraduate studies in the University of Cadiz, including courses taught entirely in English with a predominantly international-legal profile for International Relations. The level of bilingualism is expected to reach 65% English and 35% Spanish.

–It studies the complex connections of interdependence between International Relations and the current public policies on migration.

–It is suitable with the reality of today’s society through the combination of key knowledge about international relations and the European Union on one hand; and on the other – migration, asylum, refugee and border European and Spanish policies, while bearing in mind the protection of Human Rights.

This Master’s is open to all who are in possession of a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree, preferably in the area of Social and Legal Sciences and with special priority to those with University degree in Law and Social Work studies. In any case, this degree is aimed at students who have a special interest in completing their professional and academic training from an internationalist perspective, as it will allow graduates from different branches to choose their specialization according to their labour expectations, linked to international organizations and institutions, diplomacy, officials of national or international administrations, international experts and agents; as well as to international Spanish administrations and non-governmental organization specialized in the field of international migration and human rights; or private entities (such as companies, Think tanks…).
